Response of IHL to protection of women in armed conflict

Secretariat partner Women Action Center (WAC) – Gaza conducted, during the period 1 November – 31 December 2014, an opinion poll entitled "Response of IHL to protection of women in armed conflict". The poll aimed to survey the opinion of CSO staff in relation to the response of IHL to the protection of women in armed conflict/military offensives.

The poll targeted a sample of (284) female and male staff from (71) relief, human rights, development and social CSOs, who provided diverse humanitarian services to war-affected civilians.

Key conclusions of the poll included:

1. 61.7% of respondents indicated their knowledge of the principles of IHL that protect civilians and women in armed conflict.

2. 61.7% of respondents indicated their awareness of the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

3. 63% of respondents indicated their awareness of the IHL duty to hold perpetrators accountable for their crimes against women.

4. 65.5% of respondents reflected their awareness about the IHL protections of women and their families from killing, kidnapping and rape during armed conflict.

5. 57.7% of respondents indicated they were aware that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) intervened to provide support and solutions for civilians and women in war-affected areas in the Gaza Strip.

6. 61.7% of respondents indicated they were aware that the ICRC urged the conflicting parties to apply IHL provisions and principles protecting civilians and women in armed conflict.

7. 55.6% of respondents indicated they were aware of protection measures undertaken by local and international organizations to combat violence against women who were forcibly displaced to shelters during the 51-day Israeli offensive on Gaza.

8. 56% of respondents indicated confidence that IHL can provide protection for women in armed conflict.
