Head of the UN Commission of Inquiry Resigns Following Israeli Pressures

News agencies have in the last hour reported the resignation of the head of the UN inquiry into Gaza war, over Israeli government allegations of bias.

William Schabas, a Canadian academic, was appointed to lead a three-member group looking into allegations of war crimes during Israel's war on Gaza last summer. The appointment was announced in August 2014, by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

It remains to be seen what the HRC will do to ensure the work of the Commission of Inquiry is not interrupted. This is important, especially given the fact that the Commission's report to the HRC on its inquiry into the violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the oPt "in the context of the military operations conducted since 13 June, 2014”, is due March 2015.
